SEO Basics

Getting your website ranked number 1 on the first search engine results page is not an easy job. How the search engines rank websites remains a mystery for most website owners, while the rules tend to be changing on a nearly daily basis. There are, however, a few that remain constant all these years. And by following these few simple rules, you can significantly improve your website visibility in the major search engines. Listed below are the very basics of SEO that can only help.

  1. Keywords. They are the very heart of SEO. The web users look for information by entering keywords and keyword phrases into their search engines that display the search results accordingly. Obviously, you need keywords and keyword phrases that are as similar as possible to the most searched ones. How do you know which keywords to use? This is easy. Simply open Google AdWords Keyword Tool and you will instantly see how many searches a particular keyword receives. Keep in mind, however, that the most searched keywords typically also have the most intense competition. Sometimes it is a better idea to focus on keywords that are less searched but have a lower competition.

  2. Analyse your competition. Take some time to analyse websites that are ranked high in the search engines. Why? Because you have to do better than them if you want the search engines to rank you higher. How? Well, this is a little bit more difficult which is the main reasons why so many website owners seek professional help with SEO.

  3. Back links. They indicate that your website is liked by the web users and websites with many back links are “considered” authority by the search engines. However, many websites have been severely punished for link spamming and using unethical methods. If you want the search engines to consider your website authority, you need back links on quality websites with relevant content. Also, give the visitors of your website a reason to leave a link to your website elsewhere by providing them with quality content and user-friendly and attractive design.

  4. SEO content writing. Besides including relevant keywords into the content of your website, you need just the right keyword density for the search engines to recognise your website as relevant. However, keep in mind that using too many keywords can make your website appear spammy both to the visitors and the search engines. The key is to provide the visitors of your website quality content that offers valuable information and make it SEO friendly at the same time.

  5. Patience. SEO takes time to show results. Just because your website does not appear getting any higher in the search engine results pages that does not necessarily mean your SEO strategy is not working. So be patient and let the time to do its work. If you have followed the tips above, the results will come.
