| This is the Hyperlink Verifier, which takes as input a URL to a web page and tests
each external hyperlink on that page. An external hyperlink is a link to
a page on another site. An internal hyperlink is a link to a page on the same site.
The results of the verification process will be sent to your email address. Please Note!
Your email address is stored only until the results of the Link Verification have been
sent to you and are then deleted. We do not operate mailing lists or any other kind of
email service apart from this. We are NOT interested in collecting email addresses and
have no intention of doing so. Key in the URL of the page containing the links to be
checked and your email address below and click on the 'Verify Page at URL:' button. The
page will be examined and you will be informed when the page will be tested.
The Link Verifier will examine your page on its next run. The page will be retrieved
and analysed, the hyperlinks extracted, sorted and any duplicates removed. The list of
links will then be tested and the results of the of the link tests will be sent to your
email address. Only http links will be checked. ftp, gopher and other links will be
ignored.
A more detailed explanation of the response codes generated can be found at http://www.w3.org/Protocols/HTTP/HTRESP.html.
The Link Verifier is designed to verify HTML links. Pages containing hyperlinks to
streaming sources, such as Real Audio, Real Video, etc., will not return reliable results,
as the Link Verifier will not be able to resolve the link within the time it allocates.
The same applies to hyperlinks to large image files or other files. The Link Verifier
issues a HEADER request for the hyperlink URL. Files other than HTML files cannot return a
header, so the whole file is returned, resulting in a timeout error.
Note that the Hyperlink Verifier is picky about URLs. URLs which lack a required
trailing '/' will not be found.
For a fuller explanation of the various return codes and error messages please see
http://www.w3.org/hypertext/WWW/Protocols/HTTP/HTRESP.html
The Hyperlink Verifier adheres to the Robot Exclusion protocol as documented at http://info.webcrawler.com/mak/projects/robots/robots.html,
so even though a page may be accessible to your web browser, if robots have been excluded
from the site, it will not be tested.
To prevent misuse, the number of links that can be checked on a page is limited to 500.
